March 10, 1876
The First Telephone Call
On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell sent the first telephone message to his assistant, saying, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." Bell was actually a speech therapist, and he had been trying to develop a machine that would help the hearing impaired. The telephone was an accidental discovery, and Bell was as surprised as anyone when his message to Mr. Watson was transmitted. |

The Blizzard of '88
The famous Blizzard of '88 hit the Northeast on March 11, 1888. Saratoga, New York, received 58 inches of snow. Fifty inches fell on Middletown, Connecticut; 46.7 inches on Albany, New York; and 20.9 inches on New York City. The blizzard was followed by record cold. Between the snowfall and the frigid temperatures, more than 400 people lost their lives, and 200 ships sunk or were heavily damaged. |
