A New Snack Is Born
In the summer of 1853, french fries were a popular menu item at a resort restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. One evening, a diner at the restaurant complained that the french fries were too thick. He sent the potatoes back to the kitchen, requesting thinner fries. When he was served the second batch of fries, he rejected them also. This time, the chef lost his patience. In frustration, he cut paper-thin slices of potatoes and fried them to a crisp. The guest loved them. The browned chips became the restaurant's specialty and were called Saratoga chips. Today, we call them potato chips. |

One Small Step
On July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong took his first step on the Moon, he said these now famous words: "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." Before leaving the Moon, the astronauts left a plaque with this inscription: "We came in peace for all mankind." Later, during the Apollo 12 Moon landing in November 1969, astronaut Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr. referred to Neil Armstrong's statement by saying "Man, that may have been a small step for Neil, but that's a long one for me." photo courtesy NASA |
